Event Details

Join us and the BCEFF in-store on Thursday, January 15th for a movie night. The following three films will be screened, with drinks from Persephone Brewing and Nonny Beers, plus door prizes to be won. Society of Crows director Mike Mckinlay will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. All proceeds go to BCEFF and Indigenous Climate Action.

The Leap Beneath (2025, 5 minutes, Switzerland)
Director: Roman Willi
Synopsis: Narrated by Coyote Peterson, this film dives into the hidden world beneath the forest floor. Follow a springtail’s clumsy quest for food through a bustling ecosystem where mites, beetles, and other tiny creatures keep the forest alive.

Echoes of the Ice (2024, 19 minutes, Canada)
Director: Matt Lemay
Synopsis: In Echoes of the Ice, Inuk filmmaker & Indigenous Geographic Co-founder Crystal Martin embarks on a journey to Iqaluit during late spring to delve into contemporary Inuit life and the profound impacts of climate change. From sharing a traditional meal with family to traveling with Inuit hunters to the iconic floe edge—a hub for traditional hunting and community connection—Crystal experiences firsthand the challenges and resilience of Arctic life. As hunters share their deep knowledge of the land and sea, Crystal joins in a moment of cultural exchange through throat singing, embodying themes of adaptation and cultural survival. Back in Iqaluit, she explores the town's vibrant blend of tradition and modernity, meeting elders and youth who reveal how climate change affects every aspect of their lives. Through these powerful stories, Echoes of the Ice celebrates the strength and spirit of a community navigating an uncertain future.

Society of Crows (2025, 30 minutes, Canada)
Director: Mike Mckinlay
Synopsis: Ornithologist and artist Dr. Rob Butler explores the complicated and beautiful lives of crows while looking back on a lifetime of corvid obsession.
